The Mannequin Debate, Bigger the Better?

When was the last time you walked into a store and saw a plus size mannequin? Chances are that you've never seen one that was more than a size 8. Well, recently Debenhams launched plus size mannequins claiming they represent the size of the average shopper. Which was labelled a decision in the right direction in promoting body confidence. However, some extreme views claim this new launch of the size 16 mannequin is appropriating obesity. Whilst others would claim the size 8 mannequins promote the pressure of a skinny-as-beautiful ideal which is disseminated throughout modern society. Which ever your standing on the subject, it is certainly a bold move by the brand and should be applauded.

This public acceptance of mannequins is highly overlooked, yet everyday we enter shops and are bombarded by images that pressure women to look a certain way. Yes, labels are beginning to introduce plus size ranges and promote them alongside the so called 'average' sizes. However, when was the last time you picked up a catalogue with a 'plus size' model on the front. Hell, it seems derogatory for me to even label women plus size, when many are not. Yet, many modern fashion stores can overwhelm you with guilt when you spot a sparkly frock only to realise they only hold a size range of 6-12, 14 if you're lucky!

On the other hand, the argument of plus size mannequins encouraging obesity could be a logical argument, if you considered size 16 obese. Many women are pressured to lose weight nowadays, yet I can't help but think if this pressure was null and void, society would not have a wide spread issue of weight at both ends of the spectrum. However, the world of fashion is stigmatized with the image of pretty skinny girls walking down the runways, parading the latest designer labels and the lowest body fat percentage in the process. But would we have it any other way? Would you see fashion differently if it were size 16 rather than size 8?

ICONS OF FASHION: AUDREY HEPBURN

Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's
I'm a fan of the old movies, the silver screen legends who are remembered by the character they portray more so than the person behind the screen. Rarely do we meet an as iconic character as Holly Golightly or Sabrina in modern cinema! However, it was the versatility of Audrey Hepburn playing such roles which had the audience root for the character on screen more so than the star behind it all! Yet, it's the fashion that I'm really wanting to talk about. Remember the Givenchy dress in Breakfast at Tiffany's, the glasses and the statement jewellery... well who could forget! You don't even need to see the film to conjure the image of this iconic look. It is truly the grace and elegance of Miss Lula Mae which is the reason for every female having that little black dress in her wardrobe and the oversized glasses covering her face.

Hepburn with Hubert Givenchy

But we must not forget the fashion triumphs of Hepburn's other films such as Roman Holiday, Funny Face and Sabrina! Although, Breakfast at Tiffany's was arguably Audrey Hepburn's most notorious film, her partnership with Hubert Givenchy ensured every film displayed jaw dropping ball gowns
and an effortlessly sleek casual style. Whether the actress was climbing up trees as the love struck Sabrina or putting away books in a library as the stubborn Jo Stockton she was a fashion inspiration on screen and off. Often Hepburn would play a character of great transformation which was reflected in the progression of fashion within her films. For example in Stanley Donen's 1957 film Funny Face, Audrey Hepburn begins as a simple librarian. However, soon the dazzling image of the reluctant girl pushed into modelling flourishes on screen as we see looks upon looks of enviable fashion. However, it is the venerable and at times flawed characters that Hepburn portrays that captures the attention of any audience making the costumes simply an extension of art complimented by an extraordinary actress and screen legend.

Hepburn in Funny Face
Although the world of fashion continues to move forward, pushing the boundaries with sheer tops and shorter cuts each season. The footprint of Hepburn's elegant style is still seen on the runways of Paris, London and Milan, hell even the stars won't leave the house without the oversized sunglasses. Although the Breakfast at Tiffany's actress and great humanitarian sadly passed away many years ago, references to the stars legacy are still seen in modern film and television. The hit show Gossip Girl even used a pastiche of the iconic scenes of Breakfast at Tiffany's, proving that the icon can never be forgotten.
